We Should Stop Worshipping at the Altar of Convenience

In 2016, The New York Times reported that millennials were turning their backs on breakfast cereals because cleaning the bowl afterwards was too much work. The cereal industry was being out-competed by fast-food breakfast sandwiches and grocery-store yogurt and fruit cups that were straining waistlines and wallets.

With growing acceptance of hybrid working environments, this trend may wane but there are many other examples of “worshiping at the alter of convenience”. You can “Uber” (yup, that’s a verb now) almost anything your heart desires and have Amazon deliver what Uber can’t. What happened to the joy that comes from getting something we have waited for? What happened to the satisfaction of growing, preparing or shopping for something ourselves? This article discusses one European country’s attempt to reintroduce patience as its own virtue and for the good of the planet.
