Shoulda, woulda, coulda: why FOMO won’t let go of us

My early meetings with clients revolve around determining what they want to accomplish with their money. Most have come to terms with the fact that “a comfortable retirement” doesn’t provide enough information for their planner. What many have yet to appreciate is that looking outwards and trying to emulate a lifestyle seen online will never be satisfying. There will always be a more lofty lifestyle that someone else is enjoying. This article does a great job of explaining why Fear Of Missing Out – or FOMO – is so inherent in our psychology and behaviour. It also introduces a term I had not been familiar with – JOMO – or Joy of Missing Out – which apparently became more common during the pandemic. It also adds credence to my process; which focusses on the values that describe a joyful and satisfying retirement, rather than the lifestyle trinkets and toys that become tiresome quickly.
